MACON-PIATT REGIONAL OFFICE OF EDUCATION #39

Alternative Licensure/Education Programs

Alternative (non-traditional) teacher licensure is an option for those who have not completed traditional teacher preparation programs but have an interest in changing careers and becoming teachers. If you hold at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and wish to pursue a teaching license, alternative licensure may be the right fit for you.

Checklist for out-of-state universities:

  1. The university must be regionally accredited or it will NOT be accepted by ISBE.

  2. The education program MUST END IN LICENSURE. If it doesn't end in licensure, it won't end in licensure in Illinois.

  3. What are the expectations of the student teaching portion of the program? Will you be required to quit your job during student teaching OR can you work as a substitute and meet the student teaching requirements? If you do not complete student teaching, it will not end in licensure and will NOT be accepted by ISBE.

Courses leading to endorsements are offered in many universities throughout the country.  Whether you are entering a program or just taking required coursework for subsequent teaching endorsements for your current PEL, please consult with an academic advisor in the education department of the institution to ensure the coursework meets the requirements of ISBE.
