How to Become a Paraprofessional (Teacher Assistant):
Who can obtain a Paraprofessional license?
To obtain an Illinois Paraprofessional license for employment as a teacher assistant, an applicant can be qualified by one of the following:
- Must be 19 years of age AND
- Earned an Associate’s degree or higher
How do I get a Paraprofessional license?
You must be licensed by the State of Illinois. To apply for a Paraprofessional license, a candidate must first create an online account on the Illinois State Board of Education website in their Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS): https://sec3.isbe.net/IWASNET/login.aspx.
- Choose the “Click here for first time access to the ELIS system” option
- Follow the screens to create your Login Name and Password
- Provide a valid email address and Social Security Number
- Create a security question and answer
- Check “yes” to receive broadcast messages from ISBE
When your account is created, you will be transferred to the ELIS program. On the home page under What Do You Want to Do, select Apply for a Paraprofessional Endorsement. A fee of $100 (plus a small service charge) will be collected. Payments can be made using a major debit/credit card. Pre-paid credit cards are acceptable.
Your official college transcript should be forwarded to the Macon-Piatt Regional Office of Education, 1690 Huston Drive, Decatur, IL 62526.
In order to considered official, university transcripts must be submitted in a sealed university envelope or electronically transferred from the institution to the Licensure Specialist at the Regional Office of Education (firstname.lastname@example.org). The Licensure Specialist will upload all documents to your ELIS account.
Once the required documents are received and reviewed, and it is determined that the applicant has met all statutory requirements, the license will be issued. You should receive an email message from the Illinois State Board of Education to alert you that there has been activity in your licensure application. Open your ELIS account at the link above to view notifications. From your Action Center, select “Registrations.” Registration in ROE 39 is mandatory in order for the license to be valid.
When the registration fee of $30.00 is paid, the license will be considered valid. The license is valid for 5 full fiscal years and may be renewed by meeting any renewal requirements that are in place at the time.

Paraprofessionals must work under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher.
